Description

Offered is this antique Cutler-Hammer Mfg. Co. motor starting controller device. It is marked on the nameplate as "for starting duty only" for a 1-2 HP motor, 115-125 volts. Not sure if it's AC or DC. The patent date shown is Jan 7, 1890. This has an operating handle that is moved from its starting position on the left, and at the full right position an electromagnet holds it at that setting until the power is removed. A spring should then return the lever to its starting position against a rubber bumper. The terminals are marked "Line", "Arm" (armature), and "Shunt Field". The base is cast iron and the front panel is slate with some sort of painted decorative finish. This measures 7 inches square and is about 5 inches high. It weighs about 6-1/2 pounds. This is offered in as-found condition, and needs considerable restoration work. It is NOT operational, one or more of the resistors behind the panel are open and will need to be rewound. The operating lever doesn't spring back due to rust and lack of lubrication. There is rust on the base and hardware (some of which is missing). The fabric cover on the electromagnet is loose. This is a neat early electrical device for display, restoration, or parts. The wood handle will be removed and wrapped separately for shipping. Thank you for looking!
